How to put iPhone in recovery mode

You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:

  • iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
  • You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
  • You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  • You forgot your iPhone passcode

Note: You will need a computer with iTunes installed for this procedure.

Here are the steps to put your iPhone into recovery mode:

  • Prepare the iPhone USB cable by plugging into your computer, but NOT to your iPhone. Leave your iPhone unplugged
  • Launch iTunes on your computer
  • Press and hold down the Sleep/Power button on the top of the iPhone to turn off the iPhone
  • When powered off, press and continue to hold the Home button while you connect the USB cable to your iPhone, this will cause the iPhone to turn on. You will see the following:

  • Continue to hold the Home button until an alert message in iTunes informing you that an iPhone in recovery mode has been detected, like the screenshot below:

Once you’re in recovery mode, you can either restore the iPhone or update the OS as necessary.

After restoring or upgrading firmware, your iPhone will automatically reboot and exit recovery mode on it’s own.

Exit iPhone recovery mode:

You can typically exit recovery by doing the following:

  • Hold down the home and power button for about 15 seconds, this shuts off the iPhone.

  • Press the power button to boot the iPhone.
